My middle school English teacher (pure Japanese) insisted that “in New York, people pronounce ‘I can’ as ‘icon’ because the East Coast is dry”. When I heard an actual New York accent some years later, I laughed out loud.

British English is spoken more slowly, with big vowels
i can
British “Icon”
American “I kyan”
supposed
British “Suppaused”
American “Suppohsed”

Even now, I have no idea what he meant.

We learn to read and write English. Speaking is something else.

Learning to pronounce English is incredibly difficult.
There’s one simple reason Japanese people can’t speak English.
We don’t learn pronunciation properly.

Right? There are consonants that don’t exist in Japanese. If you speak Japanese you can’t learn them easily.

The language gets under your skin much more than it would at home.
When you study by yourself, you don’t have to wager much on it.
By going to an environment where Japanese isn’t understood, you will be shocked by how English floats off your lips.
From there, you can make good progress.

Indian Engrish sounds compleetory diffelent from American Engrish, but it’s still lecognized as Engrish.
The rest of the world should just recognize Japanezu Engrish as regitimate.

I was able to pronounce “McDonald’s” in English, it made me so happy.
But, it’s certainly odd that Japanese people study English for 9 years and end up not being able to speak…
In the Philippines, everyone has excellent English. How do they do it?

It’s because we only learn grammar in class.
Reading power can only be gained through training, there’s no need for all this grammar.
