Ootsu Bully Victim’s Homeroom Teacher: A Passion for Korean Education, But Indifferent To Students

Last October, a 13-year-old bullying victim killed himself in Ootsu City. The father’s lawsuit against the city revealed that the city suppressed much information about the bullying leading up to the suicide, and that the boy’s homeroom teacher knew about the bullying but failed to intervene. That teacher has not been seen at school since the story broke.

A mother of a child in the classroom: “Parents have asking the teacher to ‘show his face and explain himself’, but the principal insists that he is ‘not attending the school by his own decision.’ The kids say that when he became aware of the bullying, he just laughed and said ‘shit happens’. Of course we want to know if that rumor is true, but there was no answer to that at the conference.”

A school employee: “If this guy spoke, the amount of approval this school gave to the bullying would leak out.”

But there’s more. It’s possible that this teacher’s attitude laid the grounds for the bullying. Those who worked with him say he was “indifferent” to students.

PTA member: “At this guy’s previous job, he put all his effort into expanding Korean education at the school, but when he was moved to this school all that energy seemed to fade and he was just playing it safe.”

A former student relates his attitude just months before the bullying.

“A boy was injured in the judo class he was running. The teacher said, ‘you’ll be fine’, and made him participate in the swim meet that week. His injury got worse from that and by the next judo class his foot was broken. Nevertheless, the teacher persisted in making him swim, and after that meet he was no longer able to walk.”

The boy’s parents complained to the teacher and were shocked by his cavalier attitude. That boy was a classmate of the student who committed suicide.

When this teacher was cornered by the weekly magazine Friday, he refused to answer questions, but simply smiled and hummed a tune at the reporter. Following that “interview”, which caused an uproar when it was published, he no longer returned to his home in the evening, nor was he at school during the day. This magazine was unable to locate him.

THE QUESTION:

A new worker, whom I’ll call Ms. Sato, started her job at my workplace this year. Her eyes look somewhat dead and her way of speaking is quite calm, so that the moment I met her, I immediately got the feeling, “This person has something spiritually wrong with her.”

Ms. Sato is a little dull, but takes her job seriously and puts effort into her work.

So one day, Ms. Sato suddenly had a fit. She cried out “WAHHHH” in an unbelievable voice and jerked her body around in inexplicable ways. It looked for all the world like she was being possessed by a fox.

What’s more, her dead eyes suddenly perked up and her body took on a ferocious pose, as if she was a beast about to attack. It was really a scary scene.

It only lasted a few seconds, but it was the kind of scene that would give people in the vicinity goosebumps and chills, or make them try to back away. Just as quickly, Ms. Sato went back to normal and said, “what’s wrong?”, remembering nothing.

It seems that although Ms. Sato is a very diligent worker, she is discharged from every office she works at for sudden fits like this.

She’s such a nice person, though. I’d say I pitied her, but after seeing the fit she had for myself I’d want to discharge her, too.

Up until now, I thought fox possession was just an old story, but I definitely imagined Ms. Sato as a beast for that second. Is this what people call fox possession?

Absolutely. When people fail to understand a case like this, they simply attribute it to spirits, so any number of vague things fall under this definition.

When people stop thinking there, they get taken advantage of by “mediums” who promise to solve their problems, which is how those swindlers make money.

I’ve seen plenty of mental illnesses in my time, but this time it was really a totally different dimension and and I felt a chill running down my spine.

In Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, there’s a furor brewing over an idol group with a name that conjures up images of radiation. The group’s manager claims, “it was our plan to bring at least a little light into the world”.

“Improve the image of regional radiation hotspots”

Accompanying the AKB48 phenomenon, there’s been an outbreak of regional girls’ bands all over Japan. The group being criticized is one of these.

On January 16, 2012, they created a member recruitment website, posting advertisements to the recruitment website “Maipure” as well as the Kashiwa City notice board. The group name:

According to the press release, the group planned to “improve the image of regional radiation hotspots through dance and song”. It added that a debut single “Millisievert Fever” was being planned for an April release.

The release sought girls from the Chiba area ages 10-22, with auditions to be held on February 28th. Apparently there was a good response too, because the manager tweeted on the 17th that he was “getting a large number of inquiries and collaborators”.

On the 18th, though, he admitted that a number of complaints about the harsh group name were coming in: “I expected a healthy amount of debate, but the pressure is not insignificant.”

“It’s easy to see that I was the idiot”

Finally, on the 21st, the manager explained himself on Twitter as follows:

There are people who think radiation is a huge deal, and people who think it’s totally insignificant, and I was making fun of both sides. But I think I need to develop more respect for both views. For me, now it’s easy to see that I was the idiot here.

But even after this confession, he attracted the wrath of city employees. On the 31st he changed his group’s name to “Hop☆Steps”, but recognized that farmers and realtors were both being angered by his missteps. After discussing the issue with Chiba Prefecture’s Radiation Countermeasures Office, he ended auditions altogether. On February 2nd, a letter of apology was apparently sent to all girls who had auditioned.

The Radiation Countermeasures Office said that “we do not have the ability to outright stop this kind of activity, but we asked him to hear us out and explained our viewpoint to him. We don’t believe this was good judgment on his part.”

The manager said that 7 or 8 women had auditioned in the week that he was setting up the band.

BREAKING: Woman Injured At Sapporo Snow Festival By Crumbling Statue

At 4:15PM on February 7th, a small snow sculpture collapsed at the “Sapporo Snow Festival” and hit the back of a woman in her 60s, injuring her slightly. An ambulance was called.

According to festival coordinators, a 3-meter-tall sculpture of the character “Hatsune Miku” collapsed from the head. The Hokkaido police are examining what caused the head to become unstable.

The media never reports on murders when the attacker is handicapped.

At this point, the media, who had been covering the lurid subject of the murderer with the unusual headgear, learned that the suspect was a graduate from a school for the handicapped, and suddenly all news reports about the incident ceased. This was the last that was heard about the murder for quite some time.

A book written four years later about the incident reports that “Y” was an orphan, had four previous arrests for theft, and thought the red panda hat was a dog. He was found to have pervasive developmental disorders and sentenced to life confinement as a ward of the state.

My kite artwork is all hand-drawn, as well as pretty much everything else I do. My process entails drawing stuff in pen and then coloring with Copic markers after running them through a copy machine. Then I scan it and use Photoshop to add the lettering. I do the same for painting the background and gradation, too.
